"One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself"

This quote means to me that you have to experience it for yourself.  You can’t honestly know what it is like unless you have been there.  The same goes with helping or teaching you patients.  Patients like to relate to someone, it helps them believe that it really can happen if they know it happened to you or someone you knew also. No one is going to follow a weight loss plan coming from someone who is obese.  You also can’t teach about stress reduction when you are overwhelmed and anxious all the time. I think it is an obligation to our clients to be healthy ourselves, psychologically, physically, and spiritually.  I am working on being healthier and implementing spiritual and psychological growth in my life by exercising more, eating healthier, and using more relaxation exercises.

  1. You explained this quote in a great way. Many people want to receive advice, healing, and help from someone who has a good understanding of the principles they are teaching. I do not feel that a person has to have fully completed their goals to be a good teacher, but I think that they need to be on their way. A good example of this would be a personal trainer who is not yet at his or her full goal but has been on the journey following the plan they are teaching for awhile. I think it is acceptable to teach as you go. As long as you are one or more steps ahead and can adequately understand the experience then you can encourage others to do the same. Great post!

  2. Lisa,
I agree with you about teaching as you go, as long as you are on the same journey.

  3. You are totally on point with your blog post this week! We have to be able to be authentic in our own lives for us to be the most help to our clients or patients, whichever the case may be.

  4. You are spot on about needing to have experience with what we are teaching! It always frustrates me when someone is preaching something that they obviously don't live. We need to first experience and perfect things our own selves before we attempt to instruct others.

  5. I think this is such a great quote and love reading what classmates have posted on their blogs. The best instructors often went through the paths themeselves. Great post

  6. I agree with you. I once judged a young man who had an attitude that give answers to married couples with problems, and never have been married. I also don't understand how nurses can become instructors right after they graduate from nursing school, with very little experience on the floor. Although it is possible to teach head knowledge, it is difficult to impart insight gained from personal experience, without that experience. I would not want to go to a counselor who has never had experience in a particular area, and I especially wouldn't take weight loss advice from a morbidly obese person.

    1. Jenifer,
I also agree that a nurse should have at least a few years of clinical practice in different areas before they should teach. Being in nursing school is nothing compared to actually being a nurse on the floor. It is so different, and there is always something different and some new skill to learn. Plus it is nice to hear the instructors experiences as a nurse while in class.
